I’ve always been drawn to Python for many of the reasons that most developers love it: it’s easy to read, versatile, and widely used for everything from web development to data science. Python’s simplicity and clarity allow me to focus more on solving problems rather than fighting with syntax. The active community, extensive libraries, and strong cross-platform support make Python a pleasure to work with, no matter the project.

Over the years, I’ve developed several coding habits that have helped me write better, more maintainable Python code. These habits not only improve my workflow but also help keep my scripts portable, robust, and consistent across different environments. I wanted to share them here because I believe these small practices can have a big impact, especially for others who are looking to sharpen their Python skills or streamline their development process.

In this series of blog posts, I’ll walk through my most frequently used Python coding habits. These habits might seem simple, but they’ve made a significant difference in the quality of my work. Let’s get started with my first habit!

Habit #1: Use a Shebang

In every Python script that is intended to be executed (such as __main__.py files in a project or single-file applications), I always include a shebang at the very top of the file. The shebang (#!) is a mechanism that tells the system which interpreter to use for running the file.

What is a Shebang?

A shebang line looks like this:

#!/usr/bin/env python3

This line, starting with #!, instructs the operating system to execute the file using the specified interpreter. In this case, /usr/bin/env python3 ensures that the script runs with Python 3.

Note: The shebang line should always be placed at the very top of the file, as it must be the first line for the operating system to recognize it correctly when executing the script.

Why Shebang is Important in Linux

In Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, when you mark a Python script as executable using chmod +x, the shebang line is what allows you to execute the script directly from the command line, like so:

$ ./myscript.py

Without the shebang, you would need to call Python manually to execute the script:

$ python3 myscript.py

The shebang saves you from typing python3 before each script. It’s particularly useful in environments where scripts need to be run automatically, such as in cron jobs, system scripts, or when integrating scripts into a larger command-line workflow.

Why Use /usr/bin/env?

Using /usr/bin/env instead of directly specifying the path to Python (e.g., #!/usr/bin/python3) is considered a best practice because it makes your script more flexible and portable across different systems.

  • System Variability: Not every system has Python installed in the same location. While /usr/bin/python3 is a common path, some systems might have it installed in /usr/local/bin or even somewhere else. By using /usr/bin/env, you rely on the system’s environment to find the correct python3 interpreter, no matter where it’s installed.

  • Virtual Environments: If you’re working inside a Python virtual environment, using /usr/bin/env ensures that the script will use the Python interpreter from the virtual environment, rather than the system-wide Python installation.

No Need for Shebang in Importable Modules

When developing Python modules intended to be imported into other scripts or applications, including a shebang is unnecessary. This is because the Python interpreter is explicitly called when executing the main script, which in turn imports the required modules. The shebang primarily serves to indicate how to execute a script directly from the command line. Since imported modules are executed within the context of the main program, the interpreter is already determined by how the main script is launched. Therefore, adding a shebang in these cases can be considered superfluous and may clutter the module’s code without providing any functional benefit.

Why Shebang Matters in Windows

Many developers overlook that the shebang is also recognized in Windows when using the Python launcher (py.exe). The Python launcher makes it possible to select which version of Python to run by reading the shebang. For instance:

#!/usr/bin/env python3

In Windows, if you have both Python 2 and Python 3 installed, this line ensures that the script runs with Python 3. The Python launcher (py.exe) will detect the version from the shebang and run the appropriate interpreter.

Specifying Python Versions in Windows

The shebang also allows you to specify a specific Python version, which is particularly useful when multiple versions of Python are installed on your system. For example:

#!/usr/bin/env python3.12

In this case, the script will run with Python 3.12 if it’s installed, ensuring consistency across environments. This can be critical when you’re working with cutting-edge features available only in a specific version of Python.

In Windows, you can directly call the Python launcher to run the version of Python you want:

py -3.12 myscript.py

This command will run myscript.py using Python 3.12, even if multiple versions are installed.

Cross-Platform Benefits

Whether you’re working in Linux or Windows, the shebang line provides a unified way to make sure your Python script runs with the correct interpreter. For instance, if you’re collaborating with others on a project that requires Python 3, or if your environment involves different versions of Python, the shebang is a crucial way to ensure that the correct Python version is used.

Overall, it’s a good habit to always include the shebang in executable Python scripts to avoid environment-specific issues and improve cross-platform compatibility.
